8 days – Archaeological Tour Rome, dine-wine and Pompeii

We are pleased to present you our Rome, dine, wine and Pompeii tour. We have carefully thought up this tour to take you, accompanied by one of our archaeologists, to the most beautiful archaeological and interesting locations. Rome or Caput Mundi as an icon needs little introduction, but if you have never visited, it will be our pleasure to make Rome’s past come alive for you.

As the title of this tour states, we will not let you go home without having seen one of the world’s most interesting and important sites, Pompeii and the archaeological museum of Naples which holds many Greek and Roman artefacts from Pompei and Herculaneum.

Apart from showing and explaining you these amazing sites we will also take care of the eno-gastronomic aspect during your stay as we will lunch and dine in carefully selected restaurants and trattorias. Our company has a 10-year experience as online dining guide for high level restaurants in Rome and Italy. Depending on the season we will make sure to let you taste typical Italian or local delicacies.

One day of your tour we will dedicate to an easy walk in the Latium countryside where you will walk in idyllic surroundings on an ancient forgotten Roman road to end up in an abandoned Roman city where we will have a picnic waiting at the forum of this ancient town.

8 Days Rome, dine-wine and Pompeii

Day 1- Rome

Upon your arrival at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport or at the Termini train station, our staff will be waiting for you and bring you to the hotel where you can relax until dinner time. In the evening, just before dinner, we will welcome you to Rome and explain to you some ins and outs about the hotel, the area of Rome where the hotel is located and some other things regarding logistics and safety in Rome and in Italy. It will also be a moment to meet our guides and the other persons on this tour. Further, we will explain to you how your week with us will evolve. After this short welcome we are off to one of the most iconic monuments of Rome, the Pantheon. We will admire the building from the outside and come back in the morning to visit the Pantheon inside. Dinner near the Pantheon and a visit underground.

Day 2 – The Pantheon, The Baths of Caracalla and the via Appia

After a good rest and a good breakfast, transport will be ready outside the hotel to take us back to the Pantheon where our tour of today starts. After a visit inside and extensive explanations about the Pantheon, its history and the surrounding, we will walk to the Athletic stadium of Emperor Domitian or Piazza Navona-as it is called now- to admire the square, the fountains, have a short visit underground followed by a bit of leisure having a cappuccino, coffee or thee on one of terraces present on the square. From Piazza Navona our transport will take us to the Baths of Caracalla. These baths are a wonder of hydraulic engineering: it has been calculated that approximately 10.000 persons per day could bath there. After the visit to the baths we will have lunch on the Appian road which is quite nearby. After lunch we will bring you back to the hotel or drop you off at any place you choose in Rome. In the evening dinner near Campo de’ Fiori.

Day 3 – The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine hill, the Catacombs and the Capitoline Museum

In the morning we will show you and explain all the ins an out of the Coliseum and the Roman Forum: how it turned from a damp and soggy valley into the seat of power from where the kingdom, the Republic and the Empire were governed, which important events took place there, and which are the most important temples and buildings. From the Forum we will walk up to the Palatine and visit the Palace of Domitian, the Domus Severiana, and the temple of Cybele. We will end at the Campidoglio or Capitol square from where we will proceed to the Appia Antica to have lunch. After lunch we will visit the Catacombs of San Sebastanio and after driving back to the centre visit the Capitoline Museums. From there back to the hotel to have some rest followed by dinner near the Trevi Fountain.

Day 4 – A short hike in the Roman countryside

This morning we will leave Rome and have a short travel for very easy but beautiful archaeological hike in the countryside. Upon arrival at the starting point, we will lead you into an idyllic forest where we will start walking on a long-forgotten Etruscan and Roman road. We will cross a small stream using a majestic Roman bridge and pass numerous Etruscan and Roman tombs. At the end of our walk, an abandoned Roman city with its defence walls still standing will be waiting for us. Lunch will be an Italian picknick in the forum of the old city, with typical Italian pagnotta bread, delicious cheeses, salamis, Parma ham and naturally some excellent red or white wines. On the way back to Rome, we will stop to visit a Roman Mansio or rest area on the road and see a piece of interesting Roman road. Dinner at the restaurant of the hotel.

Day 5 – Hadrians Villa, Villa D’Este and Tivoli

Our first destination this morning is Hadrian’s Villa which lies to the east of Rome, close to the first hills of the Apennine mountains. Hadrian’s Villa is more like a small town than a villa and we will spend the morning exploring the beautiful and immense grounds, buildings and the museum. Lunch will be at a famous restaurant in Tivoli and the afternoon we will show you Villa d’Este, a 16th century villa and UNESCO heritage site build for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este. The Villa obtained fame and glory because of its extraordinary system of fountains; fifty-one fountains and nymphaeums, 398 spouts, 364 water jets, 64 waterfalls, and 220 basins, fed by 875 meters of canals, channels and cascades, and all working entirely by the force of gravity, without pumps. In the evening, dinner near the Spanish steps.

Day 6 – Pompeii & Naples

After breakfast we will travel by minivan to Naples. Once we arrive in Naples, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of Naples or as it was formerly called the Real Museo Borbonico since it was Carlo VII, the Bourbon King of Naples who in 1748 took an interest in Pompeii and had excavations started which initially produced the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum and many artefacts. At the museum we will see Roman and Greek art and other interesting finds from Pompei, you can also visit the secret cabinet (Gabinetto Segreto) which holds the collection of erotic art in Pompeii and Herculaneum. After the museum, we will have lunch in Naples and make an extensive visit of Pompeii in the afternoon. In the evening back to Rome by minivan and dinner at our hotel.

Day 7 – Saint Peters Basilica, the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel

In the morning we will visit 3 important churches of Rome, St. John’s Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Prassede and Saint Peter’s Basilica. All three of them are intertwined with Roman history. During the last visit we will take a trip to the top of the dome to enjoy a spectacular view of Rome. After all that we will have lunch nearby Saint Peter’s Basilica to continue with the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel in the afternoon. In the evening farewell dinner near the Pantheon.

The transfers in the vans will be around 10 to 15 minuts inside Rome, outside Rome the transfers could take from 20 minutes to an hour. If the itinerary includes Pompeii the transfer could take as long as 3 hours, but we might take the high speed train as an alternative in this case.

A typical Italian lunch or dinner consists of a first course il primo (pasta, rice or similar), a second course il secondo (meat or fish) served together with a side dish il contorno (vegetable or salad), fruit, dessert, and coffee. During our tours at lunch and dinner there will be a choice of two “primi’s”, two “secondi”, dessert, coffee and selected white and red wines and mineral water. Note: please let us know at the time of booking if you are allergic to some foods or if you have special dietary requirements.

Reviews

ARCHEO HIKING - My review for our lovely holiday. Just had to write to say how much my wife and I enjoyed our ‘Rome, Dine, Wine and Pompeii’ tour. We loved it! We felt immediately welcome; everyone got along, and the discussion flowed during each visit and exploration (along with the wine!) I felt the social structure of the event really enhanced the experience and to be able to absorb these wonderful sites and then have relaxed discussions with the qualified experts and other enthusiastic amateurs over such gorgeous meals...
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR – Dear Robert, thank you for the great time we had during our hike in Italy. The places you and Anastasia took us during the hikes were awesome. We never imagined that such places existed, and we would have never found them on our own. Linda and I still talk about the wonderful food we had while on the trip and we sincerely compliment you on your choice of restaurants for our lunches and diners. Thanks for the recipes you’ve sent us, we’re trying them out one at...
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR – When planning an international vacation, it is easy to become overwhelmed. What will make this trip memorable? How can we get the most out of our time? Who can we trust? Being our second trip to Italy we had already spent a great deal of time at the "tourist" locations. This time around we wanted to make it more adventurous. An internet search led us to a fabulous individual who was not only knowledgeable of the area but also of Roman history (if interested in that). We...
