8-Day Archaeo Hiking Tour To Abandoned Roman Cities and Roman Baths

Embark on an 8-day adventure that takes you deep into Italy’s past. Then, escape to the countryside and unwind at ancient thermal baths used by the Etruscans and Romans. Enjoy beautiful Italy hiking tours to Roman and Etruscan cities, roads, and tombs, all while indulging in the finest Italian and local cuisine.

8-Day Archaeo Hike The best of the Appia & Pompeii

Delve into the history of the legendary Via Appia on an 8-day journey from Rome to Benevento and Pompeii. Hike along the best stretches of this ancient paved road, visiting Hadrian’s Villa and the iconic ruins of Pompeii. Immerse yourself in Roman culture by dining in carefully selected restaurants and trattorias, savoring the flavors of Italy throughout your journey.

Our experienced team has been exploring Italy’s landscapes since 1994, discovering hidden Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval ruins. In 2022, our founder, Robert, and his companions walked most of the 532.7 km of the Via Appia Antica, dressed in authentic Roman attire, inspired by Paolo Rumiz’s epic journey. Now, we invite you to join us on the “Best of the Via Appia and Pompeii” tour, where history, adventure, and gastronomy converge.

Being our second trip to Italy we had already spent a great deal of time at the "tourist" locations. This time around we wanted to make it more adventurous. We planned a hike through an old Etruscan forest, where we were able to explore various tombs (AWESOME!). This hike allowed us to explore a "hidden" (at least from tourists) part of Italy.

The places we were taken to during the hikes were awesome. We never imagined that such places existed, and we would have never found them on our own. Linda and I still talk about the wonderful food we had while on the trip. Give our regards to your wonderful staff and thank them on our behalf.

We loved it! We felt immediately welcome; everyone got along. I felt the social structure of the event really enhanced the experience and to be able to absorb these wonderful sites. All that with the gorgeous meals really made a holiday to remember! We will certainly be considering one of your other tours in a couple of years.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour seeing not only main attractions, but also sites off the beaten track that you would never otherwise see as a tourist. Our guide, Anastasia, made everything come alive and so interesting. Being part of a small group we never felt rushed and we were encouraged to ask as many questions as we wished. If you love history and archaeology we wholeheartedly recommend Italian Adventures as it takes this kind of tour to the next level and is well worth the cost. From our welcome and collection at the airport to our return, everything went so well. Oh, did we forget to mention the food and wine……..superb

Your accommodation is in a historic 4* hotel that is named after Queen Margaret of Savoy who, in the early 1900s, chose it for her Roman sojourns. The hotel is located in the centre of Rome surrounded by the atmosphere of the dolce vita of Via Veneto. When booking a double room you should clearly request either a double bed or twin beds, otherwise we’ll assume that either is acceptable.

Note: Depending on availability we reserve the right to change the hotel for another similar hotel without further notice.

Our company has a 10-year experience as online dining guide for high level restaurants in Rome and Italy. From this experience we have selected excellent restaurants we will visit to have lunch or dinner during our tour. Please inform us of any special dietary requirements at least 30 days in advance of your trip.

Your safety is our biggest concern. Our tours have been carefully selected to be pleasant and never dangerous. All our guides have been trained to live by the “Safety First” rule while guiding. On each hike there will be at least one guide who has had First-Aid training.

Insurance is not included. Adequate business travel insurance is a condition of your contract with us. You must be satisfied that your business travel or other appropriate insurance fully covers all your requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, we will not be liable for any losses howsoever arising, in respect of which insurance cover would otherwise have been available.

Apart from our guides, there will be up to a maximum of 12 other participants on each tour.

On our tours you will meet people from various parts of the world and therefore with different backgrounds, most will be in the 40-75 age range. The persons that book our tours are curious and probably well-read who want to explore history, archaeology, and the delicious food of Italy.

Our guides are all English-speaking professionals with years of experience in guiding groups to and through the areas where we will be going, and they all love to share their knowledge and experience with you.

It depends, there will always be one English speaking guide that accompanies you, but when we go out for walks in the countryside there will be two guides with the group.

We use air-conditioned luxury passenger vans or minibuses to get around. They are comfortable and there is room for your bags or backpacks.

The transfers in the vans will be around 10 to 15 minuts inside Rome, outside Rome the transfers could take from 20 minutes to an hour. If the itinerary includes Pompeii the transfer could take as long as 3 hours, but we might take the high speed train as an alternative in this case.

A typical Italian lunch or dinner consists of a first course il primo (pasta, rice or similar), a second course il secondo (meat or fish) served together with a side dish il contorno (vegetable or salad), fruit, dessert, and coffee. During our tours at lunch and dinner there will be a choice of two “primi’s”, two “secondi”, dessert, coffee and selected white and red wines and mineral water. Note: please let us know at the time of booking if you are allergic to some foods or if you have special dietary requirements.

Walking during the visits is inevitable, to see the main sites at Pompeii we will have to walk 5 km and at Hadrian’s Villa 4 km, During the day with the hike also around 4 Km. So that is 2,5 to 3 miles on the longest walks.

In all the hotels we have selected there is a Wi Fi network

The shops in Italy are open until 19.30 / 20.00 hrs., most of the time we will be back at our hotel in Rome by 18.00 hrs. to give you time to relax or to shop. If we are travelling by van, we can drop you off at shopping areas or commercial centres when they are not to far from our route.

We recommend you to bring a good pair of walking shoes, a small bag or backpack and a cap or hat for the sun and a rain jacket just in case. If you join us on a trip in spring or autumn pack raingear and a fleece to keep you warm. We advise people who wear spectacles to bring a spare pair just in case.
